Catania is not the Sicily of postcards. It is louder, rawer, and far more alive than the manicured resorts of the island’s west coast. Built in black lava stone after the catastrophic earthquake of 1693, its baroque centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and one of Italy’s most underrated urban experiences.
Most visitors to Sicily skip Catania entirely, drawn instead to Taormina or Palermo. That is their loss. Catania rewards those who stay: it has better food, more authentic street life, and a raw baroque energy that no other Sicilian city can match.

1. Piazza Duomo — Start here, always
The heart of Catania is its cathedral square, dominated by the Fontana dell’Elefante — the city’s symbol, an ancient lava stone elephant carrying an Egyptian obelisk on its back. The square is surrounded by baroque palaces and the imposing Cathedral of Sant’Agata, patron saint of the city, built over Roman baths that you can still visit beneath the pavement.
Come early in the morning when the light is soft and the square is quiet. By midday it belongs to the tourists. In the evening, locals reclaim it — sit at one of the cafés on the square and watch Catania go about its life.
Practical info: The cathedral is open daily. Entry to the church is free; the archaeological area beneath costs €4. The square itself never closes.
2. La Pescheria — The fish market
Every morning except Sunday, the streets behind Piazza Duomo transform into one of the most theatrical markets in Italy. La Pescheria is not just a market — it is a performance. Fishmongers shout in Sicilian dialect, swordfish heads stare from marble slabs, sea urchins are cracked open on the spot, blood oranges are piled high in crates.
Walk through slowly. Buy a glass of fresh orange juice from one of the vendors. Try the arancino from the street food stalls at the market’s edge. This is the real Catania, unfiltered.
Practical info: Open Monday to Saturday, from approximately 7:00 to 13:00. Arrive before 9:00 for the full experience. Bring cash. Entry is free.

3. Via Etnea — The main promenade
Catania’s main pedestrian street runs from Piazza Duomo north towards Mount Etna, which you can see framed at the end of the avenue on clear days. The sight of an active volcano at the end of a baroque street lined with lava stone palaces is one of those images that stays with you.
Via Etnea is lined with cafés, independent boutiques, pastry shops and gelaterie. Stop for a granita con brioche — the Sicilian breakfast that consists of a semi-frozen flavoured ice (almond, pistachio, lemon or mulberry) served with a warm brioche bun. It will ruin all other breakfasts forever.
A local tip: the best granita in Catania is debated with the same passion as football. Ask your host at Sicilia Encantada for their personal recommendation — the answer will tell you something about Catania.

4. Teatro Bellini
The opera house of Catania is one of the most beautiful in Italy — and far less crowded than La Scala or San Carlo. It was named after Vincenzo Bellini, the composer of Norma and La Sonnambula, who was born in Catania in 1801. The building opened in 1890 and its interior — particularly the painted ceiling and the four tiers of red and gold boxes — is extraordinary.
The theatre hosts opera, ballet and classical concerts throughout the season. Even if you do not attend a performance, the interior is open for visits at certain hours. The ceiling alone is worth the trip.

5. Mount Etna — The volcano at your doorstep
You do not need to climb the volcano to feel its presence — Etna dominates the skyline of Catania and shapes everything about the city, from its black lava stone architecture to its cuisine. But if you want to go closer, Catania is the best base on the island.
Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe, standing at 3,357 metres. Its slopes are covered in vineyards, chestnut forests and lava fields from different eruptions across centuries. A guided excursion typically reaches the crater area at around 2,700–3,000 metres, depending on volcanic activity.

Sicilia Encantada is a restored 18th-century apartment inside Palazzo Paternò di Jaci, one of Catania’s most elegant historic residences.
